My research program examines the neurobiological impact of pregnancy and motherhood on brain plasticity, with a particular focus on the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying the cognitive and emotional demands of motherhood and vulnerability to perinatal mental illness. I investigate how reproductive transitions shape maternal brain function, behaviour, and mental health, with the overarching goal of improving the prevention and treatment of mental illness during pregnancy and the postpartum period.

My work integrates behavioural, neurobiological, and translational approaches to address key questions in perinatal mental health, including:

  • How the mental load associated with early parenting relates to cognitive function (particularly memory) and mental health in new parents

  • Whether a novel probiotic intervention can mitigate risk for the development of maternal mental illness

  • How perinatal exposure to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) influences neurobehavioural outcomes in both mothers and their offspring

Together, this research advances understanding of the maternal brain and informs evidence-based strategies to support mental health across the perinatal period.

My research findings have been published in high-impact scientific journals. I also enjoy sharing insights with a broader audience through articles on platforms such as Inspire the Mind, The Conversation France, and at Mom Brain Musings on Substack.         

In addition to my research, I serve as a dedicated Section Editor for Archives of Women’s Mental Health (Springer) and have been a Guest Editor for various journals, curating special issues on topics like the neuroscience of motherhood.
